Nurturing Next Nature

Nature is a slippery word. Nature is the opposite of culture but ?natural? behaviors are culturally expected from us. Nature is serene and wholesome, but nature is red in tooth and claw. Nature is the opposite of technology, but any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from nature. Nature is wild and untouched by humans, but there is no place on Earth unaffected by the changing climate. When we follow our trash from our homes to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch we realize that there is no nature ?over there,? separate from human societies. How can we change our concept of nature to encompass this hybrid nature, where artificial and natural are blurred in a scale of aliveness and a spectrum of artificiality? Next Nature in inextricably tied to human technology, never ?over there,? but co-evolving with us as we design nature.

The Next Nature book is a nearly 500-page exploration of the science and art of designer nature. It?s a beautiful, thoughtful, and thought-provoking collection of images and essays curated by a team of Dutch researchers led by Koert van Mensvoort. You can check out an excerpt below:

The book is split up into seven National Geographic look-alike sections, covering work, play, food, bodies, societies, and ecosystems, confronting us with the strange artificiality of our cultivated nature and the uncontrollable forces of Next Nature. We are all cyborgs at the mercy of an atmosphere we thought we could never change.

It?s not all hopeless and terrifying; Next Nature offers us images of art, design, science, and technology that can begin to deal with the ecological crises we are facing, crises that are in large part due to the old ways of thinking about the nature/culture and society/ecology divide. Like Timothy Morton?s Ecology without Nature: Rethinking Environmental Aesthetics and Bruno Latour?s ?A Cautious Prometheus? A Few Steps Toward a Philosophy of Design,? when we let go of nature and embrace Next Nature, we can begin to design technologies and natures that are ecological and sustainable.

How does technology change when ?the made? and ?the born? converge? How can we design ecologically when nature is technology? Next Nature provides countless examples, but one page struck me in particular, featuring the Maple of Ratibor and the living bridges of Cherrapunji, India. These are incredible examples of guided growth, ecological building that steers natural processes to create unique, sustainable, and context-dependent technologies. I?ve seen images of the root bridges used before as examples and inspiration for synthetic biology, that someday we will be able to program the DNA of organisms from the top-down using modular parts and computer-aided design to create new shapes and buildings. But Next Nature isn?t just about applying old technological top-down design paradigms to the control of living things, but changing how we think about technology and nature and how they interact, working with ecology and nurturing new technologies.

The blurring of nature and technology is interpreted and presented through the blurring of art and science, and here the slipperiness of words pops up again in interesting ways. In talks about Synthetic Aesthetics, artist and designer Daisy Ginsberg discusses the different definitions of ?experiment? and ?artifact? when introducing the unique challenges of art/science collaboration. For a scientist, an artifact is an error or noise in the data that distracts from the results of the experiment that is trying to uncover something about how the world works. For an artist, an artifact is the result of an experiment that is about trying to see the world in new ways. But just as nature is never ?over there,? science and art are never that far apart, and new ways of seeing and new ways of doing come from many kinds of experiments. Next Nature can give us a new vocabulary and a new philosophy to see and design the world.

Portland, Maine, mayor undergoes cancer surgery (AP)

PORTLAND, Maine ? The mayor of Maine's largest city has undergone cancer treatment.

Portland officials say Mayor Michael Brennan had successful surgery last weekend to remove a tumor from his small intestine. The tumor was discovered when Brennan sought treatment for abdominal pain.

Brennan will get additional, non-invasive treatment for lesions found on his liver. He says neither chemotherapy nor radiation is needed.

Brennan was released from the hospital Thursday. He intends to return to City Hall next week on a limited basis.

He says his ordeal made him realize that it is important to ensure that all Maine residents have access to health care. He says nearly one in four does not have health insurance.

Brennan won the election last month. He is first popularly-elected mayor in nearly 90 years.

New at The Nation: Second look at the Soviet Union?

posted at 8:35 pm on December 28, 2011 by Allahpundit

If they wanted to take a dump on Vaclav Havel?s grave, it would have been cheaper just to fly to Prague and do it.

The occasion here is the 20th anniversary of the break-up of the Evil Empire, but I like to think of it as a parting gift to Kim Jong-il. Where are you when we need you most, ruthless-Stalinist-counterweights-to-U.S.-power? Over to you, Mikhail Gorbachev:

This event led to euphoria and a ?winner?s complex? among the American political elite. The United States could not resist the temptation to announce its ?victory? in the cold war. The ?sole remaining superpower? staked a claim to monopoly leadership in world affairs. That, and the equating of the breakup of the Soviet Union with the end of the cold war, which in reality had ended two years before, has had far-reaching consequences. Therein are the roots of many mistakes that have brought the world to its current troubled state?

Within such a matrix, the United Nations and its Security Council become expendable or at best an impediment, while international law is viewed as a burdensome legacy of the past. That was the attitude taken by the United States and its supporters in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s and in Iraq in 2003. American pundits started talking about the United States as more than just a superpower, calling it a ?hyperpower? capable of creating ?a new kind of empire.??

In short, the world without the Soviet Union has not become safer, more just or more stable. Instead of a new world order?that is, enough global governance to prevent international affairs from becoming dangerously unpredictable?we have had global turmoil, a world drifting in uncharted waters. The global economic crisis that broke out in 2008 made that abundantly clear.

The West must undertake a critical reassessment of all that preceded this painful crisis. It is more than just a crisis of global finance or even a crisis of an economic model based on a race for hyperprofits and excessive consumption that grinds down the earth?s resources and ruins nature. The crisis grew out of the arrogant conviction of ?the collective West? that it had the recipes to solve all problems and that there was no alternative to the ?Washington Consensus,? which claimed to work equally well for all countries.

The Soviet Union: Guarantor not only of international stability but of western prosperity. It?s not clear to me how the world is less safe when one superpower is free to intervene in Yugoslavia or Iraq than it is when two superpowers are forever at risk of being dragged into nuclear war by conflicts between their client states, but the good news I guess is that in another decade or two we?ll be able to test the theory again with China. In the meantime, to even begin to take this argument seriously, you have to assume the rosiest possible scenario for the transformation of the USSR from expansionist communist menace pre-Gorbachev to the cuddly UN-hugging perestroika pixies that Gorby envisions in his Nation piece. How likely is it, really, that the Soviets would have reacted to the rising regional ambitions of China and India by settling into some sort of benign isolationist Eurosocialist senescence? He can?t even bring himself to tell the truth about the Soviet reaction to German unification or Balkan independence in this piece. Why should we believe him when he assure us this particular Harry Turtledove novel would have turned out awesome?

Ah well. We?ll just have to muddle though for a few more years until some other country with the means and inclination to turn America into a parking lot arrives to restore global ?balance.? I?ll leave you with this quote from one of the companion pieces to Gorbachev?s at The Nation, chronicling the troubles that have befallen Russians since the sudden sad demise of Stalinism: ?A majority of Russians, on the other hand, as they have repeatedly made clear in opinion surveys, still lament the end of the Soviet Union, not because they pine for ?Communism? but because they lost a familiar state and secure way of life.?

FDA warns docs on wart remover and eye salve mix-ups (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned healthcare workers on Wednesday to be careful when using two similarly named but very different drugs, saying a recent mix-up involving the two medications had injured a patient.

The agency said the incident occurred when a pharmacist confused Durasal, a wart remover not approved by the FDA, with Durezol, an FDA-approved steroidal eyedrop used to treat inflammation and pain following eye surgery.

The agency said the mix-up -- the latest in a series of cases involving confusion between the two drugs -- had caused "serious injury" to the patient.

Normally, the FDA said it screens proprietary names as part of the drug approval process to avoid any confusion with products already on the market. But because the wart remover was an unapproved product, its name was not vetted by the agency.

The FDA said that Elorac Inc, the Vernon Hills, Illinois-based distributor of the Durasal, had not responded to a request from the agency that it remove the product from the market place and has not recalled the product despite the FDA's concern about the risk it poses to patients.

Jeffrey Bernstein, a spokesman for Elorac, did not immediately return a message requesting comment on the FDA's warning.

3 Americans Killed In Mexico After Five Gunmen Open Fire On Buses

Three U.S. citizens traveling to spend the holidays with their relatives in Mexico were among those killed in a spree of shooting attacks on buses in northern Mexico. Hit the jump to read the rest of the story.
@WiLMajor

A group of five gunmen attacked three buses in Mexico?s Gulf coast state of Veracruz on Thursday, killing a total of seven passengers in what authorities said appeared to be a violent robbery spree.

The Americans killed were a mother and her two daughters who were returning to visit relatives in the region, known as the Huasteca, said an official in the neighboring state of Hidalgo, where the mother was born.

Hidalgo state regional assistant secretary Jorge Rocha identified the dead U.S. mother as Maria Sanchez Hernandez, 39, of Fort Worth, Texas, and the daughters as Karla, 19, and Cristina, 13. Rocha said all three held dual U.S.-Mexican citizenship. A 14-year-old Mexican nephew traveling with the three was also killed.

A U.S. Embassy official confirmed the women?s nationalities, but could offer no information on their ages or hometowns. The official, who was not authorized to be quoted by name, said consular authorities were offering assistance to the victims? relatives.

While funeral plans were unclear, Rocha said Sanchez Hernandez?s mother wants her daughter to be buried in Mexico.

Three other Mexican citizens were killed in the Thursday attacks on the three buses.

The five gunmen who allegedly carried out the attacks were later killed by soldiers.

Earlier in their spree, the gunmen shot to death three people and killed a fourth with grenade in the nearby town of El Higo, Veracruz.

On Thursday, the U.S. Consulate General in Matamoros, a Mexican border city north of where the attacks occurred, said in a statement that ?several vehicles,? including the buses, were attacked, but did not specify what the other vehicles were.

The consulate urged Americans to ?exercise caution? when traveling in Veracruz, and ?avoid intercity road travel at night.?

Lions in, Eagles out, heading into NFL finales (AP)

The Lions are in; the Eagles are out. Atlanta is closing in on a playoff berth, as is Cincinnati, while the Bears, Jets and Raiders need some help.

All part of a wild closing act to the NFL season.

With two games remaining this weekend before teams hunker down for their finales (Chicago at Green Bay on Sunday night, Atlanta at New Orleans on Monday night), the most notable news was made by Detroit.

The last time the Lions were a force, Barry Sanders was in their backfield. Sanders retired after the 1998 season, and Detroit made the postseason the next year then plummeted to the bottom of the league. In 2008, the Lions posted the only 0-16 record in NFL history.

Now, they're in the chase for the championship. Their 38-10 rout of San Diego secured an NFC wild card.

"Once you get to the playoffs, it's anybody's ballgame," defensive end Cliff Avril said. "The city of Detroit needs it. They've been waiting on us to win for a while. It's such a football town and we haven't been winning, so it's huge."

At 10-5, the Lions join North champion Green Bay, West winner San Francisco and South leader New Orleans in the postseason parade. Either Dallas or the New York Giants also will get there ? they meet next Sunday night at the Meadowlands in a winner-take-all matchup.

So if the Cowboys and Giants, both 8-7, are battling for the NFC East crown, where does that leave the Eagles, the most disappointing team in the league?

Dreaming of the playoffs.

The team that "won" free agency after the NFL lockout by signing such prizes as cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, defensive end Jason Babin and receiver Steve Smith needs to beat Washington next Sunday to finish at .500. Not much return on the dollar for Philly.

"If we had gotten into the playoffs, we would have definitely done some damage," Michael Vick said after the Eagles (7-8) beat Dallas 20-7 on Sunday. "It's unfortunate we didn't. That's the game of football. We made some mistakes early (this season) and got behind in the win-loss column. But we're just happy we're finishing strong."

Finishing strong but going to the playoffs: New England, which won its seventh in a row by rallying from a 17-0 hole to beat Miami 27-24. It was the 10th time this season a team has come back from at least 17 points to win, the most in a single NFL season.

"All the while, we never gave up on one another and never said anything negative to one another," defensive lineman Vince Wilfork said. "Going down 17-0 is a pretty big deficit, but once again this team showed its character."

The AFC East champion Patriots (12-3) would get home-field advantage for the playoffs by beating Buffalo next weekend.

Green Bay (13-1 heading into its home game against Chicago) needs one more win to grab the home-field edge in the NFC.

That's the simple stuff. As for the chaotic, well, just one look at the AFC wild-card race after Sunday's results can make your head spin.

Suffice to say that the Bengals (9-6) are in control. But if they lose to Baltimore (11-4), which needs a victory to clinch the AFC North over Pittsburgh (also 11-4), it brings three other teams into play for the final AFC berth: Tennessee, Oakland and the New York Jets.

The Jets (8-7), like Philadelphia, are one of the NFL's major flops this year. For much of the stretch drive, the Jets were in charge of the chase for the second AFC wild card. They kept messing up, though, and after Sunday's ugly 29-14 loss to the Giants, they barely are relevant.

"We play this game to win the Super Bowl," star cornerback Darrelle Revis said. "So even to be talking about that excites me, and I think it excites the team for us to go out there and try to win the Super Bowl. That's what it's about. It's not about nothing else."

Unless everyone else in the AFC wild-card scramble loses, Revis and company can forget the Super Bowl this winter.

Among the notable individual performance in Week 16:

? Reggie Bush went over 1,000 yards rushing for the first time in his career, gaining 113 in Miami's loss to New England.

? The Rams' Steven Jackson ran for 103 yards in a 27-0 loss to Pittsburgh to go over 1,000 on the season for the seventh straight year.

? Seattle's Marshawn Lynch scored the first TD rushing against San Francisco all season, a 4-yarder. It was the 11th straight game in which he had a touchdown.

? 49ers kicker David Akers set an NFL record with 42 field goals for the season, including four in the 19-17 win at Seattle.

? Carolina's Cam Newton broke Peyton Manning's NFL rookie record for yards passing in a season with 3,893 as the Panthers routed Tampa Bay 48-16.

? Denver's Willis McGahee joined Ricky Watters as the only players to reach 1,000 yards rushing with three teams. He previously did it with Buffalo and Baltimore.

Donald Cerrone interview: After nasty exchange, he?s hell bent on ruining Nate Diaz?s holiday season

Donald Cerrone isn't very big on Christmas and definitely not a fan being insulted. After an October run-in with Nate Diaz, it makes for the perfect blizzard of punches, knees and kicks next week at UFC 14.

Before UFC 137, there was no history between Cerrone and Diaz, until the younger half of the infamous Diaz brothers pulled a trick from his bag of anger.

During the workouts before UFC 137, Diaz was speaking Leonard Garcia, one of Cerrone's teammates at Jackson's MMA in Albuquerque.

"Leonard was over there talking with the dude, so I said 'oh, [expletive] I'll go over there.' They were laughing and joking around. I walked over and said 'what's up Nate, I'm 'Cowboy.' He slapped my hand away and called me a punk-ass [expletive]," Cerrone told ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM in Las Vegas (NSFW). "He told me to get on. I don't know what his point [was]. I guess he doesn't want to be cordial."

Cerrone is slightly volatile and likes to fight. You need some major cojones to start something with him. There was a brief second there something bad was set to go down.

"I was getting ready to fight. Then he walked away. He just took off after that. It caught me by surprise," said Cerrone. "Don't know anything about the guy. I think they just wake up pissed off all the time for no reason. It just seems like they're always mad. Whatever he does to get his mind ready for the fight that must be it," said Cerrone.

If you think Cerrone is going to let it slide, you're dead wrong. He brought it even stronger during an interview on "Countdown to UFC 141" saying Diaz messed with the wrong guy.

"If you want to talk [expletive] to me, you're just gonna enrage me and piss me off," said Cerrone. "So feed my [expletive] flame. That's what I say. Let's go!"

At Cerrone's last fight, a dominant win over Denis Siver at UFC 137, he again got to witness the Diaz brothers' madness first hand as Nick ranted and raved about everything under the sun.

"I was exploding into laughter on some of the comments. I was waiting for someone to take the mic away from him, like 'that's enough before you completely ruin yourself. That'll be enough out of you.' I was just surprised he kept going on about compensation and no one knew what the [expletive] he was talking about," said Cerrone.

As far as Christmas goes, Cerrone is planning on hitting the road in the morning to drive from Albuquerque to Las Vegas. Cerrone, who's picked up $225,000 in post-fight bonuses this year, bought himself an early Christmas gift, an $80,000 RV.

Medvedev offers some reforms but demands stability (AP)

MOSCOW ? President Dmitry Medvedev responded to protests over the fraud-tainted election by proposing some reforms Thursday to liberalize Russia's political system, but sternly warned that the government won't allow "provocateurs and extremists" to threaten stability.

The opposition said the proposed changes were welcome but insufficient, vowing to keep their push for the Dec. 4 parliamentary vote to be rerun and election officials accused of violations to be punished.

Medvedev, a lame-duck leader speaking in his last state-of-the nation address before Russia's March 4 presidential election, said Russia "needs democracy, not chaos" and that the government would strongly resist foreign pressure.

The statement follows massive rallies against fraud in the Dec. 4 vote, in which the main Kremlin party, United Russia, lost a quarter of its seats. Opposition leaders and independent election monitors say United Russia only managed to retain its majority by fraud.

A rally in Moscow demanding a repeat vote and punishment for the officials involved was the largest show of discontent since the 1991 Soviet collapse. Another massive rally is set for this weekend.

The protests have dented the power of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and signaled that his bid to reclaim the presidency in next March's vote may not be as trouble-free as had been thought. He and Medvedev have said they planned to exchange places.

Both Putin and Medvedev, his loyal placeholder, have firmly rejected calls for a rerun, saying the vote reflected the people's will. Putin has accused the United States of fomenting the protests in order to weaken Russia and Medvedev has rejected U.S. criticism of the vote.

"We won't allow provocateurs and extremists to drag society into their adventures, and we won't allow any outside interference into our domestic affairs," Medvedev said Thursday.

While defending the vote results, Putin has suggested easing the tight controls on Russia's political life that he introduced while he was president from 2000 to 2008.

Putin said he would support relaxing the draconian rules of registration for political parties and restoring the direct elections of governors. Putin added, however, that the president would retain the power to approve gubernatorial candidates.

Medvedev repeated the pledge to return to direct elections of governors and spelled out Putin's promise to ease registration rules for political parties. He said a group of 500 people representing more than half of Russia's provinces would be allowed to register a party ? a significant simplification of the current arcane procedure that requires a party to have at least 45,000 members.

Medvedev also proposed reducing the number of signatures a candidate must collect to get on the presidential ballot from 2 million to 300,000. He also promised to ease rigid state control over TV, saying one of the three nationwide TV stations should be allowed to shape its coverage without government interference.

The opposition, however, would only be able to take advantage of the new procedures in the next election cycle.

"Medvedev's address is like an injection in an artificial limb," tweeted Oleg Kashin, a columnist at the Kommersant daily.

Boris Nemtsov, an opposition leader, said Medvedev's proposals were welcome but not enough, adding that Saturday's rally will continue to push for the latest election to be voided and rerun.

"We wouldn't have heard any of these proposals if there hadn't been protests," Nemtsov said on Ekho Moskvy radio.

Vladimir Ryzhkov, whose liberal Parnas party had been denied registration, said the changes proposed by Medvedev were long overdue, but added they would mean little if the authorities continued to reject demands for a vote rerun.

On the Internet, many argued for keeping pressure on the government to bring more democratic changes. Over 39,000 already have signed up on Facebook for Saturday's rally.

"Well, they threw some bones to us," Elena Panfilova, head of Transparency International in Russia, said on Twitter. "Now we can either try to build something good out of them or demand the rest of the skeleton."

(AP) ? Food maker ConAgra Foods on Tuesday reported fiscal second quarter net income fell 15 percent but results beat expectations as the company raised prices to offset continuing higher prices.

ConAgra Foods Inc., like many food companies, is dealing with higher costs for ingredients, packaging and fuel and has raised its prices to offset those increases.

"The marketplace environment remains difficult due to continuing inflationary pressures and the impact of the current economy on consumers, so we are cautious about business conditions," said CEO Gary Rodkin.

But Rodkin acknowledged price increases were helping offset higher prices.

"We're not declaring victory, but we're making good progress," he said during a call with analysts.

The results for the Omaha, Nebraska, company were better than analysts expected and ConAgra reaffirmed its fiscal 2012 guidance. Shares rose 4 percent in midday trading.

The maker of Slim Jim, Chef Boyardee and other packaged foods says net income fell 15 percent to $171.8 million, or 41 cents per share. That compares with $200.9 million or 46 cents per share a year ago. Excluding one-time items related to derivatives and restructuring, net income was 47 cents per share. That's ahead of the 43 cents per share analysts expected, according to a poll by FactSet.

Revenue during the 13 weeks ended Nov. 27 rose 8 percent to $3.4 billion from $3.15 billion last year. Analysts expected $3.34 billion.

Sales of branded consumer foods, the company's largest division that makes up 63 percent of sales, rose 4 percent to $2.18 billion.

Top sellers were Banquet, Chef Boyardee, Hunt's, Marie Callender's, Orville Redenbacher's and others.

Sales of commercial foods, which make up 37 percent of sales, rose 16 percent to $1.23 billion, as the company raised prices because of higher wheat and potato costs.

Results from its Lamb Weston potato division improved due to cost cutting and higher volume.

ConAgra's outlook sees adjusted fiscal 2012 earnings per share growth in the low- to mid-single digit percentage range, with most growth concentrated in the fourth quarter, helped by higher prices and acquisitions.

After a failed bid for Ralcorp Holdings Inc., which makes Post cereal and a variety of store-brand foods, ConAgra has attempted to expand with smaller acquisitions.

In November it said it would pay $10 million to an unnamed third party become the majority owner of Indian food company Agro Tech Foods Ltd. to broaden its international presence. It completed its acquisition of pretzel maker National Pretzel Co. from Brookstone Holdings earlier this month.

"We continue to pursue growth through acquisitions," said John Gehring, chief financial officer. "While the timing of acquisitions depends on a number of factors, not all of which we control, we will continue to pursue opportunities where there is a strategic fit and a good financial return."

"We think progress made by ConAgra will lead to it being viewed as more of a growth business," said S&P Capital IQ equity analyst Tom Graves. "We expect acquisition activity to be part of its future growth strategy."

He raised his opinion on the foodmaker to "Buy" from "Hold.".

Shares rose $1.08, or 4.3 percent, to $26.25 during midday trading. The stock is up 12 percent since the beginning of the year.

Meteorite shockwaves trigger dust avalanches on Mars

Friday, December 16, 2011

When a meteorite careens toward the dusty surface of the Red Planet, it kicks up dust and can cause avalanching even before the rock from outer space hits the ground, a research team led by an undergraduate student at the University of Arizona has discovered.

"We expected that some of the streaks of dust that we see on slopes are caused by seismic shaking during impact," said Kaylan Burleigh, who led the research project. "We were surprised to find that it rather looks like shockwaves in the air trigger the avalanches even before the impact."

Because of Mars' thin atmosphere, which is 100 times less dense than Earth's, even small rocks that would burn up or break up before they could hit the ground here on Earth crash into the Martian surface relatively unimpeded.

Each year, about 20 fresh craters between 1 and 50 meters (3 to 165 feet) show up in images taken by the HiRISE camera on board NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment, or HiRISE, is operated by the UA's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory and has been photographing the Martian surface since 2006, revealing features down to less than 1 meter in size.

For this study, the team zoomed in on a cluster of five large craters, which all formed in one impact event close to Mars' equator, about 825 kilometers (512 miles) south of the boundary scarp of Olympus Mons, the tallest mountain in the solar system. Previous observations by the Mars Global Surveyor orbiter, which imaged Mars for nine years until 2006, showed that this cluster was blasted into the dusty surface between May 2004 and February 2006.

The results of the research, which Burleigh first took on as a freshman under former UA Regents Professor H. Jay Melosh, are published in the planetary science journal Icarus. Previous studies had looked at dark or light streaks on the Martian landscape interpreted as landslides, but none had tied such a large number of them to impacts.

The authors interpret the thousands of downhill-trending dark streaks on the flanks of ridges covering the area as dust avalanches caused by the impact. The largest crater in the cluster measures 22 meters, or 72 feet across and occupies roughly the area of a basketball court. Most likely, the cluster of craters formed as the meteorite broke up in the atmosphere, and the fragments hit the ground like a shotgun blast.

Narrow, relatively dark streaks varying from a few meters to about 50 meters in length scour the slopes around the impact site.

"The dark streaks represent the material exposed by the avalanches, as induced by the the airblast from the impact," Burleigh said. "I counted more than 100,000 avalanches and, after repeated counts and deleting duplicates, arrived at 64,948."

When Burleigh looked at the distribution of avalanches around the impact site, he realized their number decreased with distance in every direction, consistent with the idea that they were related to the impact event.

But it wasn't until he noticed a pair of peculiar surface features resembling a curved dagger, described as scimitars, extending from the central impact crater, that the way in which the impact caused the avalanches became evident.

"Those scimitars tipped us off that something other than seismic shaking must be causing the dust avalanches," Burleigh said.

As a meteor screams through the atmosphere at several times the speed of sound, it creates shockwaves in the air. Simulating the shockwaves generated by impacts on Martian soil with computer models, the team observed the exact pattern of scimitars they saw on their impact site.

"We think the interference among different pressure waves lifts up the dust and sets avalanches in motion. These interference regions, and the avalanches, occur in a reproducible pattern," Burleigh said. "We checked other impact sites and realized that when we see avalanches, we usually see two scimitars, not just one, and they both tend to be at a certain angle to each other. This pattern would be difficult to explain by seismic shaking."

In the absence of plate tectonic processes and water-caused erosion, the authors conclude that small impacts might be more important in shaping the Martian surface than previously thought.

"This is one part of a larger story about current surface activity on Mars, which we are realizing is very different than previously believed," said Alfred McEwen, principal investigator of the HiRISE project and one of the co-authors of the study. "We must understand how Mars works today before we can correctly interpret what may have happened when the climate was different, and before we can draw comparisons to Earth."

Simon Cowell on Paula Abdul: I Almost Tapped That

It wasn't all an act, Simon Cowell told Barbara Walters on her Most Fascinating People of 2011 special last night. He truly didn't like Paula Abdul when the two first worked together.

"The truth was on the first two seasons, we couldn't' travel on the same plane together," Cowell said during his ABC interview. "We really disliked each other that much."

The X Factor Panel

But things soon changed for the better, Simon says. For the much, much, nearly naked better!

Cowell said he's "a million percent" sure that Abdul wanted him back in the day. Did he consider critiquing her performance... in bed?!?

Yes, "but then I thought... I don't think the after would be as good as the before," he said. "I'd let her stay for a few hours, but then it would have to be good night."

Did Simon make the right choice? Would YOU sleep with Paula Abdul?

High school seniors smoke marijuana more than cigarettes, survey finds

A new survey of US teens found that?nearly 23 percent of 12th?graders used marijuana over the last month, compared with 18.7 percent who said they smoked cigarettes.

US teenagers are turning away from cigarettes and alcohol in favor of marijuana according to an annual study released Wednesday by the University of Michigan.

The abuse of marijuana is at its highest level in 30 ?years, reports the ?Monitoring the Future? survey, an authoritative snapshot of drug and alcohol use among US teenagers in grades 8, 10, and 12.?

Nearly 23 percent of 12th?graders polled said they used marijuana over the last month, compared with 18.7 percent who said they smoked cigarettes.

Cigarette use is down among all three grades, dropping 60 percent during the last 15 years,?according to the survey.?Among 12th graders, 18.7 percent reported they smoked a cigarette during the past month, compared with 36.5 percent in 1997 ??the most recent peak.

Binge drinking is also at a historic low among the combined grades surveyed, down from 41 percent five years ago to 22 percent this year. Binge drinking is defined as four drinks in one sitting for women, five for men.

But researchers speaking at the National Press Club in Washington Wednesday said that teenagers are turning to alternate tobacco products, such as hookahs, small cigars, and smokeless tobacco. Marijuana and prescription-drug use?is also on the rise.

Findings among 12th?graders show that 36.4 percent used marijuana in the past year while 6.6 percent used it daily, up from 31.5 and 5 percent, respectively, from five years ago.

The reason why marijuana is becoming so popular is that ?the perceived risk is down? which creates ?the norms against its use to weaken,? says?Lloyd Johnson, the survey?s principal investigator at the University of Michigan.

And fewer "kids view smoking marijuana regularly as having a harmful affect,? says Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Corresponding to the rise in marijuana use is the increased use of synthetic marijuana, which is often sold in drug paraphernalia shops, gas stations, or online. The drugs, also known as "spice" or "K2," contain chemical compounds that produce a high similar to marijuana when smoked.

This is the first survey that tracked synthetic marijuana; 11.4 percent of 12th?graders reported abusing the drug during the past year. Mr. Johnson says that typical users of synthetic marijuana are abusing other drugs.

?They?re quite a drug-experienced group that is probably looking around for a cheaper alternative to get a marijuana high,? he says.

The US Drug Enforcement Administration issued an emergency order March 1 to ban the sale of five chemicals used in synthetic marijuana, and the US House passed a bill banning their sale in early December.

Thirty-eight states also took action in banning the sale of the drugs, which he says illustrates a new trend in government getting ahead of the problem before it gets out of control, according to Gil Kerlikowske, director of the White House?s Office of National Drug Control Policy,?

?That?s what it takes,? Mr. Kerlikowske says.

He also warned of lobbying efforts of behalf of companies linked to the sale of synthetic and medicinal marijuana as?the presidential election season?kicks off?next year.

The survey polled 46,773 students from 400 public and private schools across the US. The survey is in its 36th year and is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, part of the National Institutes of Health.

UN unfreezes assets of 2 Libyan banks (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? The U.N. Security Council on Friday ordered assets of two Libyan banks that had been under the control of Moammar Gadhafi to be unfrozen, clearing the way for the return of more than $40 billion to help the new government rebuild the country.

The transitional government had asked the council's committee monitoring sanctions against Libya to lift the asset freeze on the Central Bank of Libya and its subsidiary, the Libyan Foreign Bank. There were no objections from any of the 15 council nations who comprise the committee by the deadline Friday evening so the sanctions were immediately lifted.

Soon after, the U.S. government announced that it has rolled back most sanctions against Libya's banks, unblocking more than $30 billion in assets. And British Foreign Secretary William Hague said his government is seeking swift European Union action to pass the regulation required to release about 6.5 billion pounds ($10 billion) in assets frozen in Britain.

Billions of dollars more in Libyan assets frozen elsewhere are also expected to be released.

The Security Council froze the assets of five key Libyan financial institutions in March following the uprising against Gadhafi's 42-year rule and his deadly crackdown on protesters.

After Gadhafi's death and the end of the eight-month civil war in October, the Security Council eased some financial restrictions to allow a resumption of trading. But the freeze on assets that the Central Bank and Foreign Bank held before March remained in place until Friday's delisting.

Britain's Hague welcomed the sanctions committee's decision, saying "Libya's government will now have full access to the significant funds needed to help rebuild the country, to underpin stability and to ensure that Libyans can make the transactions that are essential to everyday life."

"The transitional government must now redouble its efforts to build a transparent and accountable financial system which will underpin a newly prosperous Libya," Hague said.

The White House said unfreezing the assets will give the Libyan government access to most of its worldwide holdings "and will help the new government oversee the country's transition and reconstruction in a responsible manner." The United States is helping Libya with the technical steps to make the assets available as soon as possible, it said.

Libya is still subject to U.N. sanctions, including an arms embargo, and assets of the Gadhafi family and members of his regime remain frozen along with assets of several other financial institutions.

Hague said Britain will continue working with the Libyan government and other countries "to agree the steps required to remove remaining sanctions, so that Libya's assets can be used for the benefit of its people."

The sanctions committee previously ordered the unfreezing of $18 billion of assets, but U.N. officials and diplomats said only about $3 billion had gotten through to Libyan authorities because of a number of problems.

These include concerns over who the money should be released to in Libya and whether it will be used for humanitarian purposes as required in some cases, the diplomats said, speaking on condition of anonymity because discussions were private.

Another Earth? NASA confirms first planet that could support life, liquid water (Yahoo! News)

Newt Gingrich in 1996 (AP).

URBANDALE, IOWA-- They're not even plugged in yet, but the phones for Newt Gingrich's Iowa campaign office finally arrived on Tuesday, exactly one month before the state's caucuses.

After topping several polls in the state, Gingrich opened an official campaign office here just a few days ago. So far, the staff of seven, who are corralling volunteers across the country to make calls and knock on doors--one came from as far as San Diego, Calif.--have conducted their business online or on their cell phones. Although Gingrich has made several trips through the state, his organization in Iowa has been lackluster compared to several rival campaigns, which have focused on their Hawkeye ground game for months.

"Newt's been a strong proponent of leaner-faster-better-stronger for a very long time," Iowa campaign spokeswoman?Katie?Koberg told Yahoo News when asked why it had taken this long to open shop in the state holding the first caucus of the election cycle.?Koberg returned to the campaign recently after quitting Gingrich's team in June (along with 15 other staffers). ?"Until there's a strong need for something, he's been building, he's been working, he's been providing solutions," she said. "And now we're at a point where part of the solution to get him to be the Republican nominee is to have an office and a full-time staff here."

The new office, located just a few miles northwest of downtown Des Moines, is still largely empty. Volunteers only recently set up tables and chairs in the common area, and a receptionist greets callers from a card table near the door.

There's a Christmas tree at the entrance, poinsettias on every table and a copy machine that sits alone in a far corner. On a side wall rests an old Iowa map brought in from a campaign hand who worked for George W. Bush's team in 1999-2000. It still has a "Bush-Cheney" sticker on it and markings from the campaign.
